What is Wicca?
The Basics
Wicca means followers of the Wiccan faith. Both male and female followers are called Witches. Some may believe the a male Witch is called a Warlock, not true. The word warlock is derived from the Saxon "waer loga", which translates to traitor or oath breaker. (if anyone were to call my significant other a Warlock I would be highly insulted, wouldn't you?) Many types of people also use the term witch to describe themselves (including satanists) therefore sometimes the term is used negatively and casts doubts on our beliefs and that a Wiccan is a good person.
Wiccan's follow a simple rule called the Wiccan Rede,
"Do as thou wilt, be it harm none."
April 11-14, 1974, the Council of American Witches adopted a set of Principles of Wiccan Belief Please take time to look these over.
"Like all religions, Wicca has a supreme Being. In Wicca this Supreme Being may be referred to as the Great Unmanifest, the Ultimate Force, the Great Being, the Infinite, or any one of many names. Wicca realizes that there is no way for finite beings (like you and me) with a very finite- and limited- language to describe, name, or really relate to the Infinite concept contained in that of the Supreme Being. To give us something we can relate to and aspire to, the Wiccan religion brings the Unmanifest into being with the images of the God and the Goddess- further personified as the Lord and the Lady- male and female entities signifying the polarity and balance that exists in the universe. Each one, though self-creating and self-sustaining, needs the other if life is to be created and exist around them."--by Stanley Modrzyk (Turning of the Wheel)
